A Nasty Rainy Day Was Perfect For A Personal Best

Even a bad day can be good. When the rain came in Saturday morning (Sept 26, 2009) Eddie and I, along with nine other boats took refuge in a vacant dock in Mint Creek. Once the lightning was out of the way we got out in the wet stuff. We were trying different things and locations and learned a bit more about the G. The rain was coming down when the largemouth took the Ribbit frog at the end of along cast in the rain. We were on the main river fishing the grass fringes. I just saw the black back roll on the bait and I set the hook and it was on. We had no scales but it was over 6 and not 7. Up o that moment my PB was 5 lb. 14 oz. from Lay Lake. The camera was fogged over so Eddie took this with my phone.

I Like Fly Fishing more and more...

I am telling you guys, there is something to this fly fishing thing. I realize sometimes the fish are small. But remember, it is really about the quality of the experience. These two appear to have the experience. They certainly have the equipment. Someone told me they had hats on, but I just don't see it.

Behind the Elite Scenes

The volunteers for the Elite Series Dixie Duel on Lake Wheeler were made up of many of the club members and help from the Bassmasters of North Alabama and Lake Guntersville Bassmasters. The weather went from bad, to worse, to better, then bad, then to good. Thanks for everyone who helped and did their part manning up to their commitments. Eddie had a battery issue on the third day but we were able to meet up with him and give him some charged batteries. The image above is a shot taken of Eddie trolling Seiko around taken photos of Aaron Martens.

What Kind Of Idiot Wears A Hat Like That Fishing?

Maybe it is me, but I don't get it. That is one ugly hat. "FASHION POLICE!" The only thing that saves her is that it matches the glove she has on.

All I can say is "Umm, Umm, Umm."

And Now... The Rest of the Story

Yes, he finished 15th in the Stren Series on Santee Cooper and walked away with a check. But his thoughts were on the check that should have been his. What could cause a man to be mad enough to "bite the head off a six-penney nail and spit it through a man's forehead"?

Starting the day in sixth place, he was feeling good about "bringing it home". Little did he know that he had drawn as a partner, a man that approached targets at the speed of a Blue Angel approaching a runway, only to veer away moments before the casting distance was in his reach. Minutes turned to hours and the ire brought him to his knees on the rear deck, snacking on the Lil Debbies and blowing crumbs as he mumbled his discourse. All the while looking back and seeing his lead fall and blend into the wake of the boat as his partner approached the next target.

"I don't understand!" cried his speedonic partner as he flipped the weeds that were in 1 foot of water that was dropping as fast as he approached targets. Crumbs flew from Ryan's mouth as he cried, "I undertstand you dumb #%@&. You are a #$%&in% idiot."

And the Pro still didn't get it. As time expired, with his sixth place on the board being erase he cried out, "JUST ONE FISH". One wasn't the loneliest number, it was ZERO. Ryan new it was over and walked away with 15th place, wishing to fish just one more day and daring his pro partner to "ask me for a dollar".

And that.... is the rest of the story.

Snakehead Fish Caught on the Tennessee River

You have read about this species in the magazines. Well, it seems to be getting close to home now. Should you catch one of these, authorities are asking that you kill it and not release it back into the waters. It is considered an evasive species.

Helping out a fellow fisherman.

I am passing this information on for Bryant Pinyan. March 28th is a bigday for tournaments all over the state and here is another one. Bryant says:
I would like to tell ya'll of a benefit Big Fish tour we're putting on at Spring Creek boat launch in Guntersville on March 28th for a good friend, Greg Bishop. He has been fighting Cancer for about a year and has just left for Texas to undergo surgery. We learned that he was selling all his tackle and whatever else to have the funds to make the trip, so a few of us put together a fund raiser. Its 25 per person, and 5.00 of each entry goes toward Big Fish payout, and all the rest goes to Greg and his family. We're putting together some prize drawings after the Tournament. We would be very thankful for any of ya'll that could join us, Thank you.

If you can make it but would like to donate send it to Greg Bishop, P.O. Box 1062 Guntersville, AL 35976.

It Looks Like The "G" Is Giving Them Up!

Seems a bunch of you guys have been taking it to the Big "G" this week. Al and Jeff are upping the ante with their better catches of the day. Al's two best were 6.5 and 4.5 while Jeff's is a 7.5. Nice catch guys.

Guntersville 3/8/09

Went fishing with "Carp Rangler Tim" aka Shadlips

75 degrees, mostly cloudy and tropical winds. All were caught on a 12 foot cane pole using the reel from a fishing rocket and 4 pound test kmart monofilament... We used a Flirty Girty tipped with a chicken feather and lathered in the new Carolina Chip's "I need a bath" flavored Pig Scent gel formula. Here are the results:

If I would Have Known... I would have fished somewhere else!

So, you get to your lake to "fun fish" only to find that there were 300 tournament fishermen fishing 12 tournaments. How were you to know? Well, now you can get some idea simply by cliking through to Classic Bass. This site has accepted the challenge of listing the happenings at various lakes in Alabama. Simple to use... and no excuse not to know.

Suggestion for March Club meeting location?

I am not sure if the White House will be up and cooking by the March 18th meeting. So, I am looking for suggestions of a place to meet. I need some ideas and soon enough that we can make arrangements. Talk it up and send me some ideas.

Hey Man! Nice Fish!

There always seems to be one, but this time there were really four that put the fish in the boat on Lay this past weekend (Feb. 21st). Congrats to Brian Jett for his first win of this year and Brandon Messer, his partner, for second place and them taking the most boat weight. Not to forget that Brian Jett also took Big Fish honors with his 3.06 spot. Chad and his guest was brutal and ugly to us all as well, especially his guest partner. He weighed in just .38 lbs less than Brian. You guys have me shaking my shaky head.

The White House is OUT!

Some Wise Information

When your cat has a new Wiggle Wart in his paw and the other Treble in the Carpet... he is easy to catch, unless it is under your Queen-Size Bed with massive headboard. Also, use a towel to wrap up the other three paws. Did I say THICK towel? The sad part is he wrapped me around a chair and broke me off. Dang that mono...

FLW Fantasy Fishing

If you guys have not signed up and tried this over the years, FLW Fantasy is giving away some top dollar. I had David Fritts as the Winner and along with my other picks ended up as ranked 821 in the Lake Guntersville Tournament. I do not know if I made a prize cut or not. They will announce them on Thursday. Usually I am ranking around 6,000 or worse. Jump on it. You never know when you may hit that $100,000 prize given away after each tournament.

South Carolina

I just thought I'd let all of you know that I'm going to be in South Carolina for the next 7 months or so. Maybe I'll be back to fish October, November and December tournaments but who really knows for sure. I'm fifteen minutes away from the launch on Lake Murray and not too far away from Lake Monticello, Lake Wateree, Santee Cooper and several other places. I hope I have time to check all of them out.

How To Approach A New Lake

This has been a very widely talked about subject through the years.
I hope I can answer some of the questions that everyone has. Let me start by saying that in approaching a new lake I know that there is some fear involved, because at one time in my life I had all the same dilemmas that you have. I could explain this very simply, but you would be setting just like I did, when a very good friend of mine told me how. He told me, it is very easy, all you have to do is find your water on that lake. Simple right? NO, but it will be when I get done with the explanation.
Let me give you the dilemma that I had. I was used to fishing 800 to 1,500 acre lakes. I was getting ready to go fish a lake that was 100,000+ acres. Bewildered, overwhelmed these words do not describe what I was feeling. I was just plain old scared to death. I am hoping that after you get done with this article, that you will be able to go to any lake in the country and fish just as good as you do your home lake.
The first thing you have to do, is consider the time of year. This is one of the main things to take into consideration when you are going to a new lake. Is it spring, summer, fall, or winter? That is probably one of the easiest things to answer. Once you answer this question you need to get out a map of the lake you are going to. If you do not have a map, I would suggest that you buy one. I try to purchase my map at least a month ahead of time. That way when you get a few minutes of free time, you get the map out and do some study. Most lake maps are priced in the 6-10 dollar range. These maps can be worth their weight in gold. A lot of these maps you can purchase at just about any tackle or bait shop. You can also order them on a computer. The main reason to buy the map is to save yourself a great deal of time and money in gas just running around the lake looking.

I would like to take spring for an example. What you need to be looking for this time of year is shallow flats next to deep water. Another thing you need to consider, is the water on the north side of any pocket or cove is going to be warmer then the rest. One tool you might need this time of year is a surface temperature gauge. The (temp gauge) in the spring and fall is probably one of the most important tools you can carry. In the spring I also look for feeder creeks that might be bringing in warmer water. The easiest thing to do is to look at the lake and see if you can find spots on this map that compare to the lake that you fish the most and have confidence in. If you have a map of the lake you fish the most, get it out and take a look at the water you fish in march. Now take that and compare it to places on the map of the lake you are going to and see if you can find that type of stuff on it. That is what I have done since I started fishing big bodies of water. Doing that made it a lot easier for me to search out what I wanted to fish.

One thing that might help you is to look and see what boat ramp you are planning on using and try to go from there. Pick one area of the lake and just concentrate on it. Basically what I am saying, is to try to break the lake up into a bunch of small lakes. The reason I do this is to break up all the other clutter on the map. Take a look at your map and you can see what I am talking about. I hope this is getting a little easier for you now.
Once you get the main lake broken down, you go one step farther and break those down into smaller areas. These smaller areas will be the areas that you will want to concentrate on. Once you get fishing these areas you should pay a great deal of attention as to what and how you are fishing. This can help you out later. I.E. if you happen to get on a pattern, you can take the map out and look to see what else you can fish in other areas on the lake that are like what you are fishing in a certain place. You need to think what you are fishing and how you are fishing it. This is called pattern fishing. Once you get on a pattern it sure makes a day on the lake go a lot easier.
Now if you will let me go just a little farther. In the spring there is going to be some things that you are going to need to look for. They are very simple, these are objects in the water such as, rocks and trees that have fallen in the water. The reason that you look for these is that they heat up fast and absorb heat from the sun. In turn bringing bait fish and other types of critters to the object. Another thing that a lot of anglers over look is a mud line. Such as is created by boat traffic. The dirt content in the water also heats up very quickly. In turn warming the water. This time of year a couple of degrees can mean the difference in catching and just fishing. This time of year I personally fish a lot of rip-rap (rocks they put along roads to keep the dirt from eroding). The best way to find this is to look at the map and find where the bridges cross the lake. Almost all of these bridges will be lined with rock of varying size. The ones that I look for are the ones that the road runs east and west and I fish the south side of the bridge. The reason that I fish the south side is that the water warms the fastest on that side. It has the advantage of the sun almost all day on it.

One other thing that I look for when going to a new lake is feeder creeks. I tend to fish these all year. From spring on into late fall. In the spring the water run off from ponds and just from off the little creeks tends to warm fast and brings in crawfish and all kinds of bugs and bait fish. this water also tends to be a little stained or dirty. DO NOT be afraid of this. The dirty water will warm faster. Let me give you a little secret of mine, I fish a 17.5’ boat and some of the creeks that I fish I can not turn my boat around in. If they have enough water to float my boat I will fish them. Some of the feeder creeks that I fish are barely 2 feet deep. The reason for me fishing these is mainly because no one else will. I can not tell you how many bass in the 2 to 6 pound class I have caught all year in these little waterways. Another reason for fishing these creeks is that they are usually highly oxygenated, and very rich with food sources for the bass. (Lets keep that our secret though OK.) These fish in turn see very little fishing pressure which makes them fairly easy to catch. But now you need to go back to what grandpa told you about being quiet. These fish are some what spooky, so do not go into these small creeks and bang around the boat and slam lids. If you go in making a lot of noise you WILL NOT catch these fish.

You may not be a Mike Ike fan

This is a new series that is on hosted by Mike. It is on Versus. His screams are either contagious or irritating but is nothing worse than the "shawgasms" Shaw Grisgsby has on his shows. Here is a clip for tonight's show fishing the Columbia River in Nashville.

My Boat is about to be as fast as yours.

Go ahead, spend that DoReMe on a bigger, faster, engine. It won't matter. The Alabama Department on Conservation is about to impose speed limit laws for all Alabama public waters. Maximum speed may be 60mph with idle speed only in narrow waters. This is the new approach to the 100 Foot Limit that received huge grass roots opposition. I urge you to pay attention to this. The Conservation Advisory Board is to meet February 7th in Montgomery, so hold on to your props.

Where did it go?

The FLW Tour television series will now be on Versus starting in April. For those who care to read more here is the link.

Not just in our tournament, but they also took the Bass Boat Central North Alabama Club for a ride took their money as well in boat weight and big fish. Al and Wayne took the second most boat weight. Congrats guys! Danny Howell from the BBC Club allowed me to post the image he shot.

I received this image from Jann and Jenny Swaim, the club counselors for the Auburn Bass Sports Team showing the guys in the new jerseys I designed for them.
